| Getting here - The most practical way by far is to drive, but all depending on where you are coming from, it is not always the quickest. For anyone south of Birmingham, there are several budget flight services to Inverness, Edinburgh, or Glasgow available. There is a coach service to Portree from both Inverness and Glasgow, taking 3 and 5 hours respectively. Car hire is available at all three airports, and the drive, although still substantial, will take you through the
heart of the Scottish Highlands, providing a memorable start and end to your holiday. Please see the links page for suitable airlines and car hire companies.
For train lovers, the closest station is Kyle of Lochalsh, and if you are lucky it may be possible to arrive by steam, especially in the summer months. A collection service can be arranged from Kyle of Lochalsh, but there is also a good public transport service to Portree from outside the station. What’s on offer - Influenced by the weather and time of year, the list of potential photographic subjects on Skye is vast and endlessly changing. Skye has four very distinct seasons, so visitors coming in May will have a totally different experience to those coming in November. Many people would write off coming to Skye during the dark winter months, but these can actually offer some of the best photographic light of the year. Whether it’s coastal seascapes, rugged landscapes, bird life, marine life, or just the culture and character of the local people which excites your picture taking interest, there is always something on offer. Spring - The landscape comes alive with bluebell forests, and sea fog or morning mist often provide a great atmosphere. Summer - The long days mean an early start and late finish, and you'll probably still be shooting at midnight. Autumn - Heather paints much of the landscape purple, and sunrise and sunset times are at sociable hours. Winter - With snow capped mountains, frozen lochs and waterfalls, this is a great time of year to visit Skye.
